Arizona: House Panel Passes Freeway Photo Radar Ban
An Arizona state House committee approves a ban on freeway speed cameras.
The Arizona House Transportation Committee passed a bill designed to scuttle plans by the city of Scottsdale to use photo radar on freeways. The legislation would deny authority to cities to use the technology on freeways without express permission from the legislature.
Scottsdale has been planning to use speed cameras on a six-mile stretch of Loop 101. The legislation will now come before the full state House.

AN ACT
AMENDING TITLE 28, CHAPTER 3, ARTICLE 6, ARIZONA REVISED STATUTES, BY ADDING SECTION 28-711; RELATING TO TRAFFIC SPEED RESTRICTIONS.
Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Arizona:
Section 1. Title 28, chapter 3, article 6, Arizona Revised Statutes, is amended by adding section 28-711, to read:
28-711. Photo radar; prohibited use
ON A FREEWAY, AS DEFINED IN SECTION 28-7901, IN THIS STATE, THIS STATE OR A LOCAL AUTHORITY SHALL NOT USE PHOTO RADAR TO IDENTIFY VIOLATORS OF THIS ARTICLE WITHOUT LEGISLATIVE APPROVAL.
